Historical society looking to engage people virtually

The Prince Albert Historical Society is looking to reach people online.

The organization has developed virtual tours of their museums and are set to put those videos on its Facebook page. Eventually the society plans to post the videos on its website.

“We will do weekly Facebook posts and in the beginning we will focus on the museums themselves and by the end of the summer, we’re hoping to get out into the community and talk about some of the interesting community history,” Manager and Curator Michelle Taylor said.

Taylor said she and other organizers looked to produce virtual tours for the last few years. She said since the COVID-19 virus forcing museums to stay closed she was able to redirect some of her staff to work on the project, which will have multiple uses once it is finished.

“We’re hoping as well to take them into our long-term care home programs that we take out usually in the fall and winter,” she said.

Most of the raw video has been shot so far. Taylor said each video will focus on a specific area of the museum.

While it has reopened, the historical society is not seeing as many people come through its doors as usual. Taylor said the people who are coming to visit are local and they are hoping the virtual tours will prompt more visitors.

“We’re just trying to engage people and maybe hope that they will come to the museums, to see the rest of what we have to offer,” she said.
