ATV usage a concern in R.M. of Buckland

Jul 21, 2020 | 2:52 PM

The use of all terrain vehicles is an issue in the Rural Municipality of Buckland north of Prince Albert.

Reeve Don Fyrk confirmed he received reports and also witnessed people speeding on ATVs on public roads. He said he recently learned there people riding ATVs on private property without permission.

“It’s pretty much all over the R.M.,” he said.

The Buckland reeve said some riders are younger and are on machines that are too big for them.

Fyrk explained when it comes to enforcement, the R.M. is limited as they are currently without a community safety officer (CSO), who would normally be responsible for enforcing municipal bylaws.

We’re “in the process of getting a new one,” he said.

The reeve said the training for CSO officers has been put on hold at the provincial level due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Fyrk added it is important for them to have a CSO as local RCMP don’t have the resources to monitor and enforce local traffic.

Some municipalities have passed bylaws prohibiting the use of ATVs on public property. Fyrk said he doesn’t want to go down that road but said the idea has been brought up.

“It is nice to go out and have a nice ride. You just have to respect other people’s property and respect other people,” he said.
