Fog and funnel clouds: P.A.’s interesting skies

Prince Albert and surrounding area have seen some interesting weather in recent days.

This morning residents woke up to foggy conditions. Teri Lang, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada said it was a result of a variety of events.

“That’s what happens when the humidity is quite high, the winds are quite light and there had been showers and stuff in the area. So, when you have all those factors come together that’s when you get that fog forming,” she said.

Lang explained for the most part fog tends to dissipate when the sun comes up. When the sun rises the overall temperature increases above the dew point and humidity in the air goes down.

According to Lang it is hard for meteorologists to predict when foggy weather could be coming, as so many particular conditions need to be in place to create it.

“It’s just one of those that happens if all the right conditions come together,” she said.

Weekend weather

There were also some interesting weather events this past weekend around P.A. Lang confirmed a funnel cloud was spotted Saturday. She said funnel clouds develop when thunderstorms form rapidly and are met by sun which then creates the conditions for funnels to be created.

“For the most part these funnels never touch the ground, but they can and form what we call a land spout tornado,” said Lang.

Lang said land spout tornados tend to be short lived and are not usually as strong as super cell tornados, which can be stronger and longer lasting. However, she added land spout tornados can still be quite dangerous.

Funnel clouds are not uncommon for more northern parts of Saskatchewan. Lang said there was in fact a risk of funnel clouds developing Monday given the conditions in the atmosphere.

“We get funnel clouds all through the summer,” she said.
