Suicide prevention walk puts out call to P.A. support providers

Jul 9, 2020 | 4:57 PM

Two men walking from La Ronge to Regina to demand provincial action on suicide prevention are putting out a call to support services in Prince Albert.

Christopher Merasty, founder of Men of the North, and one half of the Walking with Our Angels duo, told paNOW he hopes mental health and addictions services, including counsellors and therapists, will join them on the street as they pass through the city.

“That way if any of the community members get triggered as we walk through Prince Albert, those supports are going to be there for them,” he explained.

Merasty said individuals or organizations can bring banners, hand out information or just keep an eye out for people who look like they might need support.

The pair is expected in Prince Albert around 2:30 p.m. Friday, and plan to walk south down 2nd Ave. W.

Merasty reminded the public to adhere to public health guidelines if they attend the walk.

“Just be mindful of COVID,” he said. “Wear masks, social distance, hand sanitizer. We’re not going to coming through and kissing and hugging and high-fiving.”
