‘If you run, we will shoot you’: Judge delivers sentencing in P.A. confinement case

A woman who was lured to a house by a friend she trusted, was later attacked and robbed by two men, according to evidence heard at Prince Albert Provincial Court on Friday.

Layton McCallum , 25, and Dallas McLeod-Lecendre, 30, both pleaded guilty to uttering threats, theft and assault with a weapon charges today. Both men received jail sentences for their respective roles in the incident.

According to the statement of facts read in court by Crown Prosecutor Mary Ann Larson, a 23-year-old woman called a friend and inquired about a place they could go drinking.

The friend took the woman to a residence at Manville Bay. Later in the day, while the woman was lying on a couch, she heard the door open and her friend say “go ahead boys, she’s right there.”

When the woman attempted to get up off the couch to escape, court heard she was pushed back and told “if you run, we will shoot you.”

The two men, McCallum and McLeod-Lacendre then proceeded to attack the woman. McCallum hit her with an empty vodka bottle, and McLeod-Lacendre also delivered blows with a sawed off shotgun. All the while, the “friend” held the victim’s arms behind her back.

Larson said the victim had $70 stuffed in her bra, which she tried to hide down her pants, but it was soon taken from her.

The assault lasted a few minutes, and ended when a third man showed up at the residence and said it was time to go, encouraging all three attackers to come with him. The victim went to the Prince Albert Police Station and reported the incident.

McCallum and Dallas McLeod-Lacendre have roughly each been in custody since the incident. Based on a joint submission from the Crown and defence lawyers, McCallum was released Friday based on time served. McLeod-Lacendre’s sentence (four months) will run concurrently to an existing two-year sentence he was handed in January.

Days after the assault at Manville Bay, McCleod-Lecendre was arrested by police, and found carrying drugs as well as a gun and ammunition. The firearm was the same one used to assault the woman at Manville Bay.

At the conclusion of their jail sentences, both men will serve periods of probation, which includes a no contact order with the victim.

The hearing Friday was originally scheduled for trial before both men pleaded guilty. Larson said the victim, who was not seriously hurt beyond cuts and bruises to her head and upper body, expressed relief to learn about the case concluding without a trial.

“She was scared to testify,” Larson said.

Christopher Koban, who represented McLeod-Lacendre, said his client would have received roughly the same two-year sentence, had both matters been dealt with earlier this year.

“I agree there is definitely a relationship between the offences,” Judge Earl Kalenith replied.

Chantelle Denise Custer, who lured the victim to the residence, was sentenced last November. She received a 20-month jail term after pleading guilty to unlawful confinement and aggravated assault.

The motive for the attack was not discussed in court, but Larson indicated the victim knew both Custer and McCallum, and there was a past history of hostility between them.
