Golf event gets creative for cause

Jun 9, 2020 | 8:00 AM

Technically, it’s like no other Texas scramble tournament ever played because it will last all summer.

The annual Emma Lake Golf Course Victoria Hospital Foundation (VHF) Charity Classic, presented by Schaan Home Healthcare, can’t be held all on one day this year because of COVID-19 restrictions. But that doesn’t mean it won’t bring supporters of local heath care together to make an important financial contribution to those living in long term care.

Players can register to play any time from July 1 to September 1.

“Players will come, they’ll show their registration letter, they’ll get their free meal and they’ll get to golf together,” CEO of the VHF Sherry Buckler told paNOW, noting the pandemic was not going to stop the popular event from happening.

“All they have to do is hand in their scorecard before they leave and at the end of the summer we’ll tally all the results.”

Buckler explained up to $30,000 is raised annually from golf events and this one would be for residents in long term care at Herb Bassett Home and Pineview Terrace. The funds go toward the new transportation van – commissioned last year — that shuttles residents to and from important appointments, outdoor picnics, trips to the lake, tours of the crops or even just out for an ice cream.

The VHF says the transport is vital for the menal health and well-being of long term care residents. Trips that can now take place may include just getting out for an ice cream (submitted photo/VHF)

“We just received notice that they can now take one resident at a time out in the van, so it’ll be back on the road this summer and we’re really happy about that,” Bucker said.

The entry fee for the Texas scramble is $150 per golfer with a $100 charitable tax receipt. SUN Local 62 sponsors the van’s gas each year.
