Man fails to heed judge’s warning, receives four months jail

A man who threatened to kill staff and residents at a Prince Albert long term care home was warned by a judge last February that if he were to ever be back in court, his next sentence would be much longer.

Ralph Henderson, 38, was back in front of the same judge Monday morning and received a four month jail sentence for an incident that took place on April 14th at the South Hill Shopper’s Drug Mart.

Henderson was caught shoplifting, and when confronted by police, was found carrying a pair of knives. At the time of the incident, Henderson was on probation.

Last September, Henderson was one of two men who went to Herb Bassett home and was observed waving a machete outside one of the windows, and made a slashing motion at his throat. He received a 192 day sentence for that crime, but was released in February because of time spent in pre-sentence custody.

Judge Thomas Healey was the presiding judge at the sentencing last February, and told Henderson he was very fortunate to receive the sentence he did.

“I want to caution you that if you have not learned from this and were to come back to court in the future, I expect you’d be facing a much longer period in custody,” he said.

Healey was the presiding judge again Monday morning. Among the factors that weighed into the final decision was the fact that Henderson would be leaving Prince Albert, and living with approved family members in Saskatoon who have in the past kept him on the right path.
