Free compost now available for pick-up at the P.A. landfill

Prince Albert residents are starting to reap the rewards of three years of participation in the city-wide yard waste collection program.

Anyone with a valid city water bill who has paid the sanitation fee is now entitled to 150 kilograms of free compost to be picked up at the P.A. landfill.

“It feels very good to let residents know that this product is ready so they can use it,” Nisar Ghani, city sanitation manger, told paNOW.

Ghani also thanked the public for allowing the yard waste to composted by using paper bags and not contaminating it with plastic.

One-hundred-fifty kilograms of dense nutrient rich compost fills roughly half of a curbside recycling bin, explained Ghani. Vehicles will be weighed upon entering and leaving the landfill.

Director of public works, Wes Hicks, told city council at their latest meeting, the limit was set at 150 kilograms to allow all interested residents to receive a share of the fertilizer.

“We calculated out the number of water bills in the City of Prince Albert and the volume,” he said. “We feel there’s sufficient amount for every single individual to pick that amount up.”

After the 150 kilogram limit, or for those without a valid water bill, compost can be purchased for $1 per 10 kilograms.

Ghani said people should enquire at the landfill gate and staff will direct them to where they can collect the compost.

While the limit may be adjusted in future years, assuming the yard waste collection program continues, free compost will be available for residents to collect every spring, he added.

Additional guidelines are available on the City of Prince Albert website.
