It is with heavy hearts and great sorrow that the family of Stanley Skibicki announce his unexpected, peaceful passing at the age of 87 years, at Royal University Hospital, in Saskatoon, SK, from injuries sustained in a quad accident on May 29, 2020. Stanley was born on November 13, 1932 in Grondy, Poland, to Kazimeir and Albina Skibicki. The family immigrated to Canada in 1938, and settled in the Whitestar/Cloverdale District. Dad attended Cloverdale School up to grade 6, after which he took up farming with his parents. While farming, dad held many other jobs including working at the Burns meat packing plant and trucking for various companies in a wide range of industries. He was especially proud of his pulp truck and told many stories about his adventures hauling pulp. After several years of working multiple jobs, he decided to pursue his passion for farming full time. This he continued to do right up to the time of his passing. Dad always said, “Farming is in my blood.”
Dad met the love of his life Victoria Olexyn at the French-Canadian Hall in Prince Albert in 1956, and they were married on July 12, 1958. Together they operated and worked hard on a mixed grain and cattle farm, and eventually just a grain farm. Until recent years when their son, Dale, took it over. Over the years, their hard work and passion for farming grew the farm from a small quarter-section to a 3,000+ acre operation.
Dad loved his family unconditionally and always was there for us, helping in any way he could. He was a jovial person full of wit and humor, with a laugh that could fill the largest room. He was an authentic “people person” and never one to let the opportunity to talk to somebody go to waste.
Dad was famous for his “Stanley-isms” and seemed to have a phrase or joke for every occasion. Many of these came out at the dinner table:
Chicken today, feathers tomorrow / Chicken died yesterday, may as well have it today / I thought that chicken looked wobbly
Pie around, take a square
Take a little butter; it slides better
Eat, ‘cause you don’t know where your next meal’s coming from
I’ll send you a bill at the end of the month (that bill never seemed to come)
Same price, put some more!
Let him sleep, save a meal
Others showed dad’s passion for work:
Let’s go, no time!
There’s work to be done
Nice to relax after a hard day’s work
There’s no profit in sleeping
And others still came out as general sayings and advice:
Crazy now, and if you drink yet!
No use complaining, no one listens anyway
Take a chance, Columbus did
Why worry, it won’t help anyway
You comin’ in for coffee?
Dieboja, and many other Polish sayings
Dad had a few foods that were his favorite: kielbasa, bologna, loaf of bread, Pepsi, kapusta (cabbage) soup, headcheese and lots of potatoes. In his earlier years he enjoyed fishing with his uncle Tony at Sandy Lake. He loved the mountains and took many family trips, even talking about taking one last trip to the mountains this summer 2020. Family was extremely important to dad. He was proud of his children and grandchildren and enjoyed attending their various activities. Dad loved to sing, often also playing his guitar or harmonica. If you caught him in the house, you would see him watching re-runs of Three’s Company. He particularly liked Jack Tripper and Chrissy.
Left behind to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Victoria of 61 years; his son, Larry (Jeannette, David Pinay), Theresa, Shelley (Randy Krammer); and Dale (Corrie); his grandchildren, Mark Krammer, Brittany Krammer, and Brody Skibicki; his sister-in-law, Doris Skibicki; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Stanley was predeceased by his parents, Kazimeir and Albina Skibicki; his brother, Joe Skibicki; his sister, Mary Gutek; his brother-in-law, Walter Gutek; along with numerous uncles, aunties and cousins. The family would like to thank the medical teams at Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert and Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon for their outstanding care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sacred Heart Cathedral Capital Campaign, 1401 4th Avenue East, Prince Albert, SK, S6V 5H1.
The Visitation for Stanley will be held at 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., on Thursday, June 4, 2020, at River Park Funeral Home, in Prince Albert, SK; and a Private Family Service will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Friday, June 5, 2020, at Sacred Heart Cathedral, in Prince Albert, SK, Father Roque Concepcion officiating.
