The Prince Albert Food Bank is getting support from a local service organization.

On Friday morning, the P.A. Cosmopolitan Club donated $3,000 to support the food bank. The club’s president-elect Doug Gent said they were motivated to make the contribution because of the economic conditions created by the COVID-19 virus.

“There’s two million people out of work in April. There’s a definite need… [for] the food banks to help people who are struggling,” he said.

Gent said social distancing restrictions have affected the local service club, as it’s led to fundraiser cancellations. He said Friday’s donation came from previous fundraisers.

He added the club members are still staying in touch with each other.

“We’re using zoom now for our meetings, where we can get all our board on there,” he said.

Kim Scruby, executive director of the P.A. Food Bank, said the donation will help with the increased demand for food hampers.

Because of COVID-19, its led to a change in service for clients and the food bank has partnered with other community groups. The food bank is providing these groups food hampers, which are then being delivered to people.

For people looking to support the food bank, Scruby said they always appreciate donations of non-perishable food items like pasta or canned foods.
