Former P.A. hockey team manager’s trial adjourned

May 6, 2020 | 12:00 PM

The court case surrounding the alleged actions of a former Prince Albert hockey team manager, likely won’t be concluded until later this summer or early fall as a result of precautions surrounding COVID-19.

Jamie Engen, 39, was scheduled to face trial Wednesday at Prince Albert Provincial Court, on a charge of sexual exploitation, but the matter was adjourned, and a new trial date will be set next week.

As a result of the current COVID-19 precautions, many trials involving people not in custody, such as Engen, are getting pushed back to later dates. Scheduled trials involving individuals in custody are receiving first priority.

Engen was originally charged on Oct. 20, 2019, and a not guilty plea was entered in court nearly two months later. The circumstances surrounding the charge have yet to be discussed in court

As defined in the Criminal Code, a sexual exploitation charge applies to a person in a position of trust or authority toward a youth “who for a sexual purpose, invites, counsels or incites a young person to touch, directly or indirectly, with a part of the body or with an object, the body of any person, including the body of the person who so invites, counsels or incites and the body of the young person.”

This past season would have been Engen’s first as a team manager with the Prince Albert Northern Bears, but he was a board member for several years as well. He was released from his position when the charge was laid.

The Northern Bears are a part of the Saskatchewan Female U18 AAA Hockey League.

Engen’s lawyer Garth Bendig has previously indicated no more than one day will be needed for the trial.
