Île-à-la-Crosse and Sakitawak Métis Nation implementing lockdown on Friday

Apr 29, 2020 | 5:58 PM

The Northern Village of Île-à-la-Crosse and the Sakitawak Métis Nation are declaring a community lockdown that will be effective Friday, May 1 to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

“This lockdown will be in effect until we determine, in consultation with the chief medical health officer that there is minimal to no risk of contracting the COVID-19 virus,” a media release signed by Mayor Duane Favel and Sakitawak Métis Nation President Jimmy Durocher said. “This lockdown is being implemented for the safety of our community and more importantly for the safety of our elders and most vulnerable members of our community.”

Non-community members will be restricted from entering the village. Essential services (gas, food, medical supplies, front-line workers, doctors, nurses, SaskPower and SaskTel) will be exempt, along with other services deemed essential. Any surrounding communities that need to access the health facility will also be exempt.

The community will also implement 24-hour security. Residents will be allowed outside perimeter check stops. Frequent hand washing and masks are encouraged by community officials.

“We respectfully ask our residents to be considerate of other community check stops in our region,” the release said. “They may have restricted access as well for non-community members.”

Those who are employees in Northern Alberta will be requested to self-isolate for 14 days as directed by the province’s chief medical health officer.

“We are also encouraging those employees returning home from Northern Saskatchewan mine sites to self-isolate,” the release said.

There will be signs about the access restrictions installed on Highway 155 at both the North and South entrance to Highway 908.
