Full steam ahead on P.A. street sweeping

Apr 29, 2020 | 12:03 PM

Street sweepers have been on the roads in Prince Albert since the beginning of this week, clearing sand and debris in the downtown and ensuring equipment is ready to start full operations Monday at 5 a.m.

Roadways Manager Brent Kennedy told paNOW the sweeping schedule is the same as snow clearing, with crews starting with priority one arterial roads.

Weather permitting, they should be into priority four, residential areas, by the end of May or the beginning of June, with the entire operation being complete in six to seven weeks.

“A very light shower is okay because we do wet down the roads with our water truck anyway,” Kennedy said. “But if it’s a heavy rain and there’s water then it just turns into mud so we’re basically shut down.”

While street sweeping in Saskatoon has been pushed back a month, in part due to COVID-19, Kennedy said they never considered delaying the operation in Prince Albert.

Kennedy reminded the public to be aware when streep sweepers are in their area and stay well back.

“They do throw rocks up and stuff every now and then and it is dusty so just be cautious and aware,” he said.
