The Prince Albert Fire Department took time late Friday morning to honour the victims of the mass shooting in Nova Scotia.

Firefighters donned their dress uniforms and red sashes before marching to the front of the main fire hall on 15th Street East. Once they assembled, members stood in formation and saluted while observing a moment of silence.

Fire chief Kris Olsen said it was important to show their support for those affected by the tragedy.

“We just want to show our support for the RCMP and for their lost member Heidi Stevenson and also all the innocent victims of this tragedy,” he said.

Wear Red Friday was spearheaded by the National Police Federation, which represents RCMP members. Besides the fire department, P.A. police, Parkland Ambulance, Lakeland and District Fire Department and staff from the city of P.A. took part.

Olsen said they made sure to take precautions to ensure those participating were protected. To do this, firefighters set up at opposite ends of the fire hall to ensure proper distancing requirements.

The fire chief said they have taken part in memorials for fallen emergency service workers in the past, but have never taken part in something quite like this.

Olsen said it is probably a hard time for RCMP members dealing with the loss of a member, which is made harder by the conditions created by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“They’re most likely grieving also the fact that they can’t get together and celebrate Heidi Stevenson’s life and definitely our heart goes out to them,” he said.
