City of P.A. looking to province for guidance on summer activities

Apr 22, 2020 | 1:28 PM

Prince Albert’s Mayor says the city is waiting on the provincial government before making decisions on what summer activities can proceed.

Greg Dionne said he expects the province will speak to what will be permitted and what will not when Premier Scott Moe addresses his so-called Re-Open Saskatchewan plan Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m. Dionne added considering there is such a wide range of facilities and activities it is important for the information to be coming from a single source.

“That’s why it’s so valuable we speak with one voice,” he said.

Specifically, Dionne said the city will take their lead from the province on what to do regarding the swimming pools, golf courses, skateboard park, soccer and baseball fields, for example. He added the province is also expected to touch on whether people will be able to go fishing.

Besides summer recreation, Dionne said events like garage sales are not an essential service. He explained the city will be directing any inquiries which come their way to the province.

“We will be passing on the 1-800 number from Saskatchewan health,” he said.

When paNOW visited the Kinsmen Skateboard and BMX Park Wednesday afternoon there were a few people making use of the park on bikes and scooters. The city of P.A. has previously said getting outdoors for exercise is good as long as people maintain the 2-metre social distancing, and it was not immediately clear what the future status of the skatepark would be.

While the City of Prince Albert is taking a wait and see approach, the City of North Battleford has acted differently. Recently they dumped shale in their skate park to stop the public from using it. North Battleford has also announced sports fields will remain closed.
