With a lot of new incoming players into the Prince Albert Raiders, there were a lot of potential players to pick up the Raiders’ Rookie of the Year award. But Ilya Usau’s strong rookie season gives him the nod for the George Cowie Award as Rookie of the Year.

Usau finished fifth in the WHL in rookie scoring with 22 goals and 54 points in 58 games. The 17-year-old first-year player with American/Belarusian dual-citizenship also had three power play goals and a +14 rating for the Raiders.

Usau, who introduced himself as his nickname ‘Bob’ during his acceptance speech, quickly became welcome among his team and his fans.

“I wanted to thank the whole Raider organization for my first WHL year of my career, the fans, coaches and teammates, my billets and the whole Raiders staff made it unbelievable. It was a lot of fun playing in Prince Albert, for sure,” Usau said. “All you guys made my transition way easier than I ever expected and I can’t be thankful enough for that. It was an honour wearing the Raider jersey and I can’t wait to be back next year.”
