Church prepares for different kinds of celebrations

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Prince Albert is ready to carry on with Easter services amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

People looking to take in Easter mass will be able to watch services via a live stream on the diocese Facebook page. Bishop Albert Thévenot said they have been live streaming Sunday services, which have gone over well with mostly positive feedback.

“(The) response has been very good, last Sunday was already up to 7,000 people watching us directly,” he said.

Thévenot said they also had people watching the stream from a range of locations including Washington D.C. and Toronto. For those who are not able to watch live, the videos will be put up for them to watch on both Facebook and the diocese website.

Thévenot said delivering Easter services in this manner is strange for him. He said Easter is an important time for Christians because of marking the death of Christ and the resurrection, among other important events. The bishop said the celebrations will also be different as they will not have processions and will not be moving around the church.

“We don’t do the full celebration because we don’t have the people there to participate,” he said.

Thévenot said the current time is a difficult one, it could also be one of growth as people have more time to spend together as a family. He added during these times he feels it is important to be able to connect with people.

“I want to show my fellow people that I am with them in this very difficult time where they’re living in isolation and perhaps feeling a little bit discouraged and abandoned,” he said.
