Community project continues during COVID-19 pandemic

The Rose Garden Hospice is still working to collect donations during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Marina Mitchell, a member of the board for the Rose Garden Hospice said the organization closed their offices in the Gateway Mall but can still accept donations in other ways.

“You can still donate online, and we have had people donating online which is great,” she said.

Mitchell said they have not had anyone pull back pledges as a result of the virus.

However, the organization have had to cancel their annual Hike for the Hospice fundraiser which was set to go in May. Mitchell said in the past the summer event has been an important one with local philanthropist Malcolm Jenkins matching donations.

Mitchell added there are also people who have on their own put on events to raise money and those too have stopped amid the outbreak which could push back getting shovels in the ground.

“That could back us up a little bit,” she said.

Overall, Mitchell is hopeful the current situation will be a bump in the road for them and is hopeful they may be able to do a fundraiser in the summer months, pending health officials deeming it safe to resume public events.

Hospice organizers are looking to raise $4 million to build the facility. Currently they are over halfway to their goal with just over $2.2 million raised for the effort.
