PA Athletics Shine in Edmonton

Members of the Prince Albert Athletics Club had a strong showing over the weekend in Edmonton.

More than a dozen local athletes took part in the 2020 Alberta Indoor Track and Field Championships, in events such as long jump, 60 metre dash, 400 metre dash, and triple jump. Many athletes achieved new personal bests at the meet.

Raedyn Reddekopp, one of Prince Albert’s youngest competitors took home five medals and achieved two personal bests over the weekend. Reddekopp, age 11, came away from the meet with a gold medal in the girl’s 60-metre dash with a time of 9.23 seconds. Fellow competitor Steele Zablocki finished second in the same category with a time of 9.79 seconds.

Reddekopp also took home two silver and two bronze medals in her other events, the 150 metre dash, 400 metre, shotput and running long jump.

Storm Zablocki, 15, ran the men’s Under-18 60-metre dash in under seven seconds, finishing with a time of 6.99 seconds to take first place.

Prince Albert’s Javon Benson and Brandon Sawatzky finished third and fourth respectively in the men’s 4-kilogram shotput in the Under-16 category. Sawatzky tied for third in the men’s Under-16 high jump.

Hadley Benson of Prince Albert finished fourth in the men’s five-kilogram Under-18 shotput and first in the Under 18 men’s triple jump.

Shelaine Pritchard finished second in women’s long jump and sixth in the Under-18 60-metre dash. Emily Cole-Johnson finished fourth in the Under 20 women’s 60-metre category.

Bernard Warner with Prince Albert Athletics finished third in the men’s Under-20 long jump, while Jacob Klassen and Rayne Cyr both had strong showings in the 2000-metre run, finishing fourth and sixth overall.

Prince Albert Athletics Coach Mike Taylor competed in Edmonton as well, running the 200-metre dash in 23.78 seconds to take first place in the men’s 35+ Masters and reach a new personal best.

The club will compete next in Saskatoon March 13-14, which will be the final meet of the indoor season.
