Travel not recommended as blizzard like conditions hit parts of province

Feb 29, 2020 | 8:58 PM

The Saskatchewan RCMP are advising the public about unfavourable weather moving east from the western part of the province. Travel is not recommended with difficult road conditions Saturday night and snowfall expected to cause further travel difficulty Sunday..

According to a media release Saturday evening Maidstone RCMP had responded to many motor vehicle accidents including some vehicles going into the ditch. Officers were reporting blizzard-like conditions with reduced to zero visibility, icy roads and blowing snow.

The weather system moving east was impacting areas such as North Battleford, Meadow Lake, Turtleford, Glaslyn, St. Walburg, Big River, and would likely impact La Ronge, Pelican Narrows and others later.

According to the Highway Hotline, travel is not recommended in those areas. If you’re planning to travel anywhere in the province police say to check the Highway Hotline.

Earlier, Environment Canada forecast up to 20 cm of snow would sweep into a wide area of north central Saskatchewan including La Ronge and Meadow Lake. Rapid accumulations are expected to make driving difficult in some locations.
