P.A. getting the Rush treatment

Rush’s spotlight to shine on Prince Albert

Saturday’s Saskatchewan Rush matchup against the Toronto Rock will have a strong P.A. feel to it.

The game will spotlight Prince Albert as part of the Rush’s Hometown Spotlight series, which features a city or town in Saskatchewan for each home game this regular season.

Javan Bexson, the president for both Prince Albert Lacrosse and Sask Lacrosse, said it’s a big deal for both the city of Prince Albert and its lacrosse community.

“It’s awesome. It’s fantastic to be acknowledged by the Rush as a community dedicated to lacrosse,” Bexson said. “Having the Rush is huge to the growth of the sport in Prince Albert. The more people see the Rush in Saskatoon, the more they want the opportunity to play in their home centres.”

Not only will the Rush’s spotlight be shone on Prince Albert during the game, but it’s also Lacrosse Day in Saskatchewan as well.

“It’s pretty cool that we’re going to be featured on Lacrosse Day in Saskatchewan,” Bexson said. “There are going to be young athletes at halftime and pregame out on the floor. Athletes from Prince Albert will be out there and run around on the floor. During the day, they get the opportunity to do drills and tour the Rush dressing room. It’s a fantastic day that Saskatchewan Lacrosse is putting on with the Rush.”

Bexson was planning on attending the game anyway, being a Rush season ticket holder.

Prince Albert has grown as a lacrosse association. For a while, if you wanted to play lacrosse in Prince Albert, players would be limited to box lacrosse—indoor lacrosse played in hockey rinks like the Rush play. But in recent years in large part to Bexson’s work, field lacrosse has been introduced. Prince Albert will be hosting their first field provincials this year, June 12-14.

But that’s not all that’s on the horizon for lacrosse in Prince Albert this year.

“Provincials is going to be huge. We’re going to have anywhere from 16-20 teams coming to Prince Albert that weekend,” Bexson said. “Expect strong showings from the Predators this year, the Outlaws are only getting better. The A-league program is taking a step forward, they’ll be playing the majority of their games out of Prince Albert so that’s going to be exciting as well. Lots of teams to follow this year, and a lot of exciting things happening.”
