Organizers push to sign up more volunteers

The Esso Cup is not far off.

The female midget triple A national championship will see the country’s best teams come to Prince Albert this April.

Tournament organizers are hard at work getting ready for the event, which includes signing up volunteers to help set up and carry out the event. Tournament Chair Robin Wildey said they have a good idea of how many people are needed.

“To make a good program run, we’re looking at about 180 volunteers to make things run smooth,” he said.

Wildey said they are close to achieving that number. To help with the effort, organizers plan to host a sign-up event at the Art Hauser Centre at 7 p.m. Members of the tournament board will be on hand to help people through the process.

Volunteers jobs range from merchandise, to helping with food, security and game operations. Wildey added they are especially looking to get people on board to be team ambassadors, who would liaise with teams visiting the city.

“They’re kind of acting as the liaison with the City of P.A., with us and everything, show [them] the ropes,” he said.

People who sign up to volunteer will be charged a $25 fee, but in exchange will get a tournament shirt and free admission to games provided they work nine hours. Wildey said volunteers do need to get a criminal record check from city police or the RCMP depending on where they live. When they sign up volunteers will be provided with a letter from Hockey Canada they can take to police to get the fee for the check waved.

Wildey said people he has talked to in the hockey community are excited and looking forward to the tournament. He added the event will grow support for women’s hockey.

“It’s going to be a great exposure, to show people how much the female game has improved over the years and how much interest there is,” he said.
