Motorist blames city for parking fine

Feb 12, 2020 | 3:46 PM

A Prince Albert woman who parked improperly said city snow clearing left her no other choice.

The resident whose car was impounded after city staff say she parked it too far from the curb and left it there for 48 hours has taken her case to city hall.

“I had parked the best I could considering the city had just plowed the snow and created a big windrow of snow where I usually park,” she said in a letter to administrators.

She said she would have moved the car, but the incident happened during the recent mid-January cold snap and she was unable to start it.

Ultimately another car hit hers, damaging the driver’s side mirror.

“I’ve had other complaints by other citizens on that street,” Ward Coun. Dennis Nowoselsy told Monday night’s meeting, referencing 22nd St. E. where the woman was parked. “It’s a narrow street and a major street.

“I’d like to see a motion that this lady be reimbursed for the impound of the car, if we had had the street cleaned adequately she wouldn’t be getting the ticket.”

Mayor Greg Dionne said he saw pictures staff members took of the car and appeared skeptical of the woman’s claims.

“She was a quite a distance. If you look at the photos, away from the snow[bank], she wasn’t right up against the curb,” he said.

Ultimately council decided to have the financial services department investigate the complaint and come back with a report and photos of the incident.
