CrokiCurl rink looking for home

The Prince Albert Downtown Business Improvement District is putting out a call for venues to host CrokiCurl this year.

Carolyn Carleton, executive director of the Downtown Business Improvement District said they are hoping to find a host site quickly.

“I would say sooner than later, because it takes about a week to set up,” she said.

Carleton added her organization would also like to have the game up and going as winter festival activities are set to start.

Venues interested in hosting CrokiCurl need to be able to provide a flat service to accommodate the rink. They also need to be able to set up the structure, while providing maintenance and security and ensuring access to interested groups. The host site will also need the proper insurance.

Carleton explained her organization would be able to put prospective hosts in touch with the company which helped set up the rink last year. She added the structure just needs to be assembled.

“It does take some manual labour at the beginning and then you know maintenance as it goes on with the shovelling and clearing,” she said.

The business improvement district decided to reach out to find a third-party operator because of some internal restructuring at the organization they are not able to take on the responsibilities. Carleton said they wanted to make sure the game was available again because of how popular it was last year.

“It was our best option for what we could do, just because of the time frame,” she said.

Any group is eligible to host the rink as long as they are located in the city and can meet all the requirements. Carleton said ideally, they would like to have the rink in front of city hall again but might entertain the possibility of having CrokiCurl at a different site.

“Maybe if it works out really well, maybe its something we can do every other year,” she said.
