Stoon spoils Shellbrook showcase for Mintos, before bounce back in Battlefords

Jan 19, 2020 | 4:59 PM

For the second straight time, the Prince Albert Mintos split their weekend. They fell 4-1 to the Saskatoon Contacts as part of Hockey Day in Shellbrook, before bouncing back with a 2-1 victory over the Battlefords Stars.

Despite having Shellbrook’s Ashton Ferster and Gage Helm on their club, that wasn’t enough to give them the boost they needed to beat the second-place Contacts. The Mintos were outshot 40-18.

Underager phenom Brayden Yager scored a hat trick for the Contacts in the game. Ty Bahm had the lone goal for the Mintos.

Mintos goaltender Joel Favreau stole the show on Sunday, as the Mintos beat the Stars 2-1. Favreau stopped 38 of 39 shots and was obviously named as the Mintos’ player of the game. Even on Saturday’s defeat, Favreau made 36 saves on 39 shots.

Favreau has been a workhorse for the Mintos, as he’s played every game for the Mintos so far in 2020 and at the Mac’s Tournament since the injury to starter Spencer Welke.

Kody Willick and Chase Bertholet both scored for the Mintos.

The Mintos will be back in action on Wednesday, to head to Tisdale to face the Trojans. The Mintos will return on home this weekend to face the Legionnaires on Saturday, and the Notre Dame Hounds on Sunday. Both of those games will be at 1:30 p.m. at the Art Hauser Centre.
