‘I tried to tell him not to shoot again’: Victim recalls encounter with strangers

The victim of last week’s shooting in Prince Albert’s midtown area says the incident happened very fast, but its impact on his mental health is ongoing.

The 26-year-old, who requested his name not be published out of safety concerns, spoke to paNOW about the events that transpired outside and near his house on Jan. 10. For the purpose of anonymity, paNOW changed the victim’s name to “Alex”.

Alex recalled around 7:45 p.m., he left his house to go get a coffee and was about to get into his parked car in the alleyway when he noticed two strangers standing near his neighbour’s garage.

“They came running towards me with a shotgun. I am not sure what kind it was but they started demanding that I give them my wallet and my phone,” he said.

Alex explained the two strangers also demanded he get in the car and take them for a drive. Alex said ‘no’.

“I dont know why I was saying ‘no’ but the guy had a shotgun and there was a thought in my mind it could be a fake gun,” he said.

Alex said he grabbed the gun and began to struggle with the man. While this was happening, the man’s female companion yelled at both of them to get in the car. Alex lost hold of the gun and attempted to run back to his home.

As Alex opened his gate, he said he heard a popping sound and instantly felt a shooting pain in his lower left leg. He said he managed to take two or three more steps towards the house before collapsing to the ground.

“I looked back when I was on the ground and I tried to tell him not to shoot again,” Alex said.

The pair fled on foot while Alex called 911. Out of concern his attackers may still be watching, Alex opted not to go inside the house, where his sister and children were staying.

“I had to crawl down the side of my house, open the front gate, and then crawl to the front so I could wave [the paramedics] down,” he said.

Minutes later, paramedics took Alex to the hospital where he was informed by the doctor both the tibia and fibula in his left leg were broken.

Prince Albert Police continue to investigate, and the two suspects have not been caught.

Police are asking neighbours who may have security cameras to examine their footage and report anything that looks suspicious.
