No changes to Saskatchewan cannabis regulations as Quebec raises age of consumption

Dec 31, 2019 | 4:01 PM

The Saskatchewan Government says it’s keeping an eye on changes to cannabis legislation in Quebec but have no plans to modify the age of consumption for the drug in this province.

“The province is closely monitoring developments in cannabis regulation in other provinces,” the Government of Saskatchewan said in an email to paNOW.

“There are currently no plans to raise the legal age to buy cannabis in Saskatchewan.”

As of Wednesday, people under the age of 21 in Quebec won’t be able to buy or possess recreational cannabis, as the province enacted the highest age restriction in the country.

“It’s a step in the wrong direction for Quebec,” Jim Southam who runs Prairie Cannabis in Prince Albert, told paNOW.

“It’s just going to leave another segment of the population without access to legal cannabis products. If it’s 19 across the country, I’m pretty sure 19 to 21-year-olds in Quebec are just as mature and responsible as anyone else.”

Southam said the new age restriction won’t stop young people from smoking weed, it will just force them to buy it from illegal sources.

“It’s just going to be fueling the black market and criminalizing their citizens who choose to consume who aren’t 21 yet,” he said.
