2 PA men face steep fines for illegal hunting violations

Two Prince Albert area men are facing some steep fines for illegal hunting activities.

Both men recently pleaded guilty to five separate charges under the Wildlife Act and the Criminal Code of Canada. They were fined a total of $8,951.

After a call was made to the Ministry of Environment’s Turn in Poachers (TIP) line in February of 2015 Conservation officers investigated the calls regarding a bull elk that had been shot out of season on private farmland near St. Louis.

Doug Carl Risling, from Prince Albert pleaded guilty to four charges, including unlawfully hunting elk, unlawful possession of caribou antlers, illegal storage of a handgun and possession of a restricted handgun without a licence.  

Risling was fined $6,640 and received a one year period of probation.  He also received a two year suspension for hunting and trapping.

James J. Hryciuk, a landowner in the St. Louis area, pleaded guilty to one count of assisting in unlawfully hunting elk and was fined $2,310.  

Hryciuk also received a two year hunting and trapping suspension.

The Crown seized the elk antlers, elk meat, caribou antlers and a Browning handgun with magazines and ammunition.
