Mintos kick in to help local cause

The Prince Albert Mintos were not the only winners this past weekend.

While the Mintos came out with a 3-2 victory over the Yorkton Secon Maulers Saturday, the Rose Garden Hospice got a little closer to its fundraising goal as the money from the gate and 50/50 draw went to support the cause.

The money from the game in total came out to $1,300, but doubled to $2,600 after local philanthropist Malcom Jenkins matched the contribution. Jenkins also donated a raffle prize which also helped raise money.

Mintos’ team manager Don Fauchoux said the organization enjoys having the chance to do a fundraiser like the one last Saturday.

“Every opportunity we have, we try and do something like that. We can’t always be out there because we’re busy during the day with work and with school,” he said.

Fauchoux explained the team was motivated to support the hospice for a few reasons. One being they see the need for a facility like it in the city. The team was also motivated to get involved as Jenkins is a longtime supporter of the Mintos.

“He’s a sponsor of ours and he helps us, so we’re helping him back,” Fauchoux said.

Jenkins is not the only hospice booster with connections to the club, as Marina Mitchell, a board member with Rose Garden Hospice, helped out the Mintos by serving as a billet.

Saturday’s game was the first time the team has worked to support the hospice. Fauchoux couldn’t say whether it would become a regular event.

“We’ll see what the future brings,” he said.

At their next home game Thursday, the Mintos are asking fans to bring non-perishable food items to support the Prince Albert and District Food Bank.
