Exploitation case involving former P.A. hockey team manager, moving forward
The lawyer representing a former manager of the Prince Albert Northern Bears hockey team, charged with sexual exploitation, says a plea will “probably” be entered at the next court date.
Garth Bendig made the comment to paNOW, after making a brief appearance Thursday at Prince Albert Provincial Court. Bendig’s client, Jamie Engen, was charged on Oct. 20 and was not present when the matter was raised at 1:30 p.m.
During the hearing, which lasted no more than three minutes, Bendig informed the judge he was filing an application to review Engen’s current release conditions. The case was soon after adjourned to Dec. 5.
The circumstances of Engen’s charge have not been discussed in court, but as defined in the Criminal Code, a sexual exploitation charge applies to a person in a position of trust or authority toward a youth “who for a sexual purpose, invites, counsels or incites a young person to touch, directly or indirectly, with a part of the body or with an object, the body of any person, including the body of the person who so invites, counsels or incites and the body of the young person.”
