WCB changes now official

Prince Albert’s Fire Department is applauding a decision by the Saskatchewan Workers Compensation Board.

“It’s great news,” Fire Chief Kris Olsen said.

Starting this week the board will be providing presumptive coverage to firefighters for skin, cervical, prostate, breast and other forms of cancer. Presumptive coverage means if a firefighter is diagnosed with one of the listed cancers and multiple myeloma, it will be presumed to be due to their work.

The decision to expand coverage was announced last December.

Olsen said the changes bring Saskatchewan into line with other provinces. He added the expansion of coverage to include breast and ovarian cancers recognizes changes in the profession.

“It just identifies the changes in the demographics in the fire service; we are seeing more female firefighters entering the service,” he said.

Olsen said research shows those in the firefighting profession are more susceptible to certain cancers due to them working in carcinogenic environments.

“The stats are quite compelling that it’s been recognized that it is a work-related injury,” he said.

The P.A. department has taken steps over the years to protect its firefighters. Some examples are changes to cleaning equipment and venting truck exhaust out of the building.

Olsen was not been able to provide specific numbers but said he is aware of retired members who would be eligible under the new changes.
