William “Bill” Smytaniuk
Bill was born on a homestead in Kalyna district on February 3, 1930 and in 1939 he moved to Prince Albert with his parents. While attending school in Prince Albert, Bill had a job splitting wood. In 1945, on his 15th birthday, he quit school and started working for Sask. Box factory. Bill worked in various places in PA – hauling mail and parcels, driving cab, building in construction and driving truck. He worked in bush camps in Alberta, Northern Sask. and BC. Bill did bridge construction in Sask. and Manitoba. In 1958-69, he worked at the 6 Bohemian (Molson’s) Brewery for 11 years. Of all the jobs he worked, Bill preferred being an equipment operator. Bill met Madge in 1953 and they married in 1954. In 1961, they moved from PA to St. Louis where they raised their family in this small community. Bill donated time for 30 years to the St. Louis community. He was involved in minor sports – hockey and baseball. He was on the recreation Board, Rink and Minor Sports committees. Served on the school board as committee member and chairman, and was president of the school hockey league for a number of years. In 1974, Bill was honored as the St. Louis Citizen of the Year. In 1995, Bill retired from the Department of Highways after 21 years. In 2005, Bill received a medal for volunteerism for development of communities in the province. Bill is survived by his wife Magella “Madge”; his five children Debbie (Mike), Diane (Neil), Larry (Gail), Mark (Karla) and Darren (Sarah); his fifteen grandchildren Keith (Nicole) & Cara (Blair); Marc (Bobbi), Allyssha, Sarah, Trevor & Brad; Amanda (Ian), Sheena, Mitch & Ty; Randy & Michelle; DJ & Jordan; his thirteen great grandchildren; his sister Victoria; as well as numerous relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his two sons Joseph and Randy; his two brothers Walter and George, his sister Maria; his parents Sadie and Mike Smytaniuk and his father and mother-in-law Alfred and Beatrice Gervais. A Public Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 21, 2010 from 7:00 p.m. to 800 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 22, 2010 with celebrant Reverend Father Maurice Fiolleau. Both services will be held at Gray’s Funeral Chapel, 575 – 28th Street West, Prince Albert, SK. Interment will be held at St. Louis Cemetery. In lieu of other tributes, memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan, 279 – 3rd Avenue N, Saskatoon, SK S7K 2H8.
