McWHIRTER, Florence Elizabeth, late of Saskatoon formerly of Prince Albert. Florence passed away peacefully on New Year’s Day at Circle Drive Care Home, Saskatoon with family by her side at the age of 93 years. She was born to Verne and Elizabeth Powers (nee Warbis) in Shellbrook on August 13, 1917. Florence was raised and schooled in the Shellbrook area. Her first marriage in 1937 to Cecil Angell produced two sons, Curtis and Harry. Following Cecil’s death in 1940, she moved with her parents and two little boys to Prince Albert where she took employment, first in a creamery and then in ladies wear store. Early in 1946 she married Bob McWhirter and they had one son, Tim. Bob’s employment with V.L.A. kept them in Prince Albert until 1955 but took them to Ogema until 1960 with FCC at Weyburn until 1966 and to Regina until 1977, at which time they retired back in Prince Albert. In Prince Albert, Weyburn and Regina she worked in ladies wear stores, and was active in home and school, church and other activities, such as playing bridge. During the early years of their retirement, Florence and Bob spent two winters in San Diego and sixteen in Scottsdale. They enjoyed the many trailer park activities, also having family and friends visit them at the park and make sight-seeing trips together. It was in Scottsdale that Florence took up painting which provided many hours of enjoyment. Although they missed going south in the winter, Florence and Bob continued to enjoy Co-op apartment living in Prince Albert, during the period 1998 to 2005. Her failing health dictated a move to an assisted living facility in Saskatoon, namely Luther Riverside Terrace. Not long after the move, she suffered a stroke and thereafter was confined to a wheel chair in a nursing home. Notwithstanding all this, she was a model patient, remaining cheerful with a good sense of humour and being loved by all. Florence is survived by her loving husband of 65 years Bob; sons Curtis (Connie) Angell and Tim (Kathy) McWhirter; niece Linda (Wally) Kawula; sister-in-law Marg (Bruce) McGillis; six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Florence was predeceased by her parents; son Harry Angell; brother Ed Powers; nephew Verne Powers and niece Patricia Hunter. Our sincere thanks and gratitude to the nurses and staff of Circle Drive Special Care Home, for their excellent and loving care of Florence over the past four years. Memorial Donations may be made to Circle Drive Special Care Home, Saskatoon, Alzheimer Society or the charity of choice. Funeral Service will be held Friday, January 7, 2011 at 2:00 pm in Northern Funeral Service-MacKenzie Chapel, 130-9th Street East, Prince Albert, SK with Pastor Dennis Serfas, Director of Spiritual Care officiating.
