Michael Belzevick
March 8, 1925 – April 16, 2011
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father and grandfather, Michael Belzevick on Saturday, April 16th, 2011. We are proud that our dad not only witnessed, but was part of the generation that participated in the rapid and incredible transformation of our province. Dad could be best described as a lifelong student who was constantly looking to improve and expand his knowledge. A skilled tradesman who looked as comfortable reading a detailed, technical manual as he did reading one of his treasured Pierre Berton books. He had a fascination with all things mechanical. As his grandchildren often marvelled there was no limit to what grandpa could fix. Although this was his lifelong passion, he loved to engage in discussions on politics, history, geography … well, just about anything. He had an amazingly keen insight on many different subjects and was always eager to hear other's opinions. Dad was an incredibly capable and resourceful person. Above all, Dads devotion to his family was unwavering. He was always there to support, offer advice or lend a hand to his children and grandchildren. Dad's life journey was a remarkable one. The only son born to Belarussian immigrants, Victor and Helena Belzevick, on March 8, 1925 near the village Albertville, Sask., he overcame incredible obstacles and hardships. He lived through the nasty decade of the dirty 30ís. At age 18, his father died and the responsibilities of looking after the homestead and aiding his aging mother fell solely on his shoulders. Dad met and married Dora Kochan on July 18, 1948. They lived and farmed on the family homestead south of Weirdale. Dad supplemented his farm income by working the winters on the oilfields in Alberta. In 1956, they moved to Meath Park where dad worked as a heavy duty mechanic with his employer and good friend, Walter Zolinski. In 1974, he was hired by the Prince Albert Pulp Mill (Weyerhaeuser), where he worked for 20 years until his retirement in 1990. He valued his employment at the mill and, in particular, his comradeship with his co-workers. He enjoyed a peaceful and happy retirement with our Mom until her passing in March 2005. Dad lived a full and active life. He never stopped working, improving his knowledge or helping others until his final passing. He is survived by his sons: Allan (Lorna) Ben (Kay), Lawrence (Donna), John (Wanda), Garry, Rick, Don (Bonnie) and David (June); his daughters Rose, Debbie (Clint Mauthe) and Connie (Andrew Herdin); grandchildren and great grandchildren, Evan & Christina Belzevick and daughter Nitika; Maxine & Todd Rundbraaten; Jocelyn and Codey Schrader and their children Jordyn and Austin; Brett, Jonathan and Allan Belzevick Jr.; Michelle and Roxanne Belzevick; Angie Belzevick; Matthew and Karli Belzevick; Chris and Amanda LaFaver and their son George; Candice LaFaver; Nolan, Brody and Ryan Herdin; Bridgette and Brittany Belzevick; Katrina; Alex and Bohdan Belzevick and Ivan and Ian Belzevick. Dad was predeceased by his loving wife Dora; his son-in law-Larry LaFaver; parents Helena and Victor Belzevick; father and mother-in-law Nick and Anna Kochan; brother-in-law John Kochan and brother and sister-in-law John and Mary Podborochynski. We would like to thank the kindness and compassionate care our father received from the nurses and attendants at the Victoria Hospital. As well, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Loots, a skilled and caring physician who Dad held in high regard. Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 21, 2011 at Gray’s Funeral Chapel, 575 – 28th Street West, Prince Albert, SK with Mrs. Margaret Ferchuk officiating. In lieu of other tributes, anyone wishing to place memorial donations may do so to the Canadian Diabetes Association, PO Box 12013 Stn BRM B, Toronto, ON M7Y 2L3 or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan, 279 – 3rd Avenue N, Saskatoon, SK S7K 2H8.
