BOYES- Magna. The family of Magna Boyes is profoundly saddened to announce her peaceful passing on April 20, 2011 at the Birchview Nursing Home in Birch Hills, SK. Mom was born September 11, 1922 in Torpa Norway, to Nickolai and Helga Harstad, The family came to Canada in 1928 and settled in the Birch Hills area and in 1929 the family homesteaded in the Dryden district. Magna married Tom Boyes and settled with him on the family farm in the Northern Light area until they retired from farming and moved to Birch Hills shortly before Tom’s death in 1987. Mom recalled that the most important lesson she learned in life was her Dad’s exhortation to develop character. It meant staying out of trouble, keep the Ten Commandments, be strong in spite of our circumstances, there was always hope, and the future lay ahead – full of opportunity and hope. The lessons led her to put her faith in God and trust no other. Mom was a light and strength to all who knew her. Her faith carried her through her life and she always had time for tea and a chat. She cherished her Norwegian heritage, making lefsa and celebrating many 17th of May events in Birch Hills and Weldon over the years. Mom had a passion for reading and writing, after Bernice passed away, Mom wrote and published a biography of Bernice’s life. She kept up her letter writing to family, here and in Norway, and could always be relied on to send a note of encouragement at just the right time. Mom was always proud of her garden on the farm, never a weed in sight, and even won a prize from the Western Producer for best garden. Mom was predeceased by her husband, Tom Boyes; her daughter, Bernice Boyes; her grandson, Lt. Justin Boyes; her brother, Albert, and three sisters; Nina Riley, Sue Elliott and Helen Sandberg. She is survived by her son, Brian (Angela) Boyes; 2 grandchildren, Curtis Boyes of Shilo, Manitoba and Lindsay (Adam) Knox of Calgary; Justin’s wife, Alanna Boyes and one great-grandson James Boyes of Edmonton.
