Mae Victoria Hill was born at Silver Park on April 30th, 1919 to William and Jane Leathem, the third youngest in a family of ten. In 1939 she married Gordon Hill, and they lived on a farm at Silver Park and raised a family of two. In 1962 they moved to Melfort and when Gordon passed away, Mae moved to Diefenbaker Place, and resided there until she became a resident of Parkland Place in 2007. Mae passed away at Parkland Place on June 25, 2011 at the age of 92.
Mae was a happy, hard working person. She helped on the farm with chores, cooked for threshers in the fall and wood sawyers in the winter. She planted a huge garden and there was always a cake on the cupboard and a cookie in the jar for visitors. She loved to curl and belonged to the Women Missionary Society and also had time for card parties and old time dances. After moving to Melfort she became active in the Church and United Church Women’s group.
She was a great babysitter and enjoyed looking after her grandchildren and later her great grandchildren. She enjoyed visiting with friends and neighbours and having her family around her. She was a hockey fan of the Melfort TM’s and then later the Melfort Mustangs. Her favourite ball team was the Toronto Blue Jays. She had a busy and happy life and we are blessed to have shared it with her.
Mae was predeceased by her husband Gordon, son-in-law Lyle Van Camp, six sisters and two brothers.
Mae is survived by her daughter Joyce Van Camp, son Jack (Laurel) Hill and her brother Jack (Dorothy) Leathem; grandchildren Gary (Connie) Van Camp, Carl (Jackie) Van Camp, Rod Van Camp, Krista Hill, Josh Hill, Jennifer Youritchuk, and Shelby Youritchuk; great grandchildren Jessie (Jerred) Spencer, Cassie Van Camp, Ty and Lexi Van Camp; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A service will be held Thursday, June 30th, 2011 at 11:00am at Melfort United Church – 220 Burrows Avenue West, Melfort, SK. Rev. Emmanuel Menyereye will be officiating. Interment to follow at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
