(May 6, 1918 – August 12, 2011)
Mrs. Joyce Laing, 93 years of Quill Plains Centennial Lodge in Watson, passed away peacefully with family at her side on Friday, August 12, 2011.
Joyce was born on May 6, 1918 in Regina to Richard Montgomery and Mary Rebecca Bennett. As a young child, she moved with her family to Conquest, where she received all of her education, graduating at the age of 16. She graduated from St. Paul’s Hospital School of Nursing in 1940. On July 2, 1942, she married Eric W. H. Laing.
Throughout the years, Joyce worked in health care wherever they were living. She attained her Diploma of Public Health in 1965 and worked as a Public Health nurse until retiring at the age of 65. She was truly a scholar, loved reading and taking classes.
She was an active volunteer in the many communities in which she lived, giving selflessly of her time for many groups and organizations, Eastern Star, Royal Purple, PA Museum, PA Wildlife Society, Council of Canadians, and UCW just to name a few. Joyce enjoyed leisure time at their cabin at Chitek Lake, traveling and gardening and spending time with her family.
Joyce will be lovingly remembered by her three children and eight grandchildren: PENNY (Tom) Lowes of Quill Lake and family, Brent (Melody) Lowes of Quill Lake, Rebecca Welsh (Rocky Ingram) of Saskatoon and Thomas (Candace) Lowes of Canora; ERIC (Linda) Laing of Regina and family, Tania (Jerrod) Turgeon and Cindy (Chris) Patenaude, all of Regina; and William (Brenda) Laing of St. Albert, AB and family, Erin Laing (Beth) of Regina, Sarah (Josh) Semotiuk and Daley Laing, all of Edmonton, AB; 13 great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Joyce was predeceased by her parents, Richard and Rebecca Bennett; husband, Eric; son, Richard (in infancy); brothers, Alvin (Edith), Frank (Eda) and sister, Vera (Mac).
The Funeral Service for Joyce will be held on Wednesday, August 17, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Wesley United Church, Quill Lake, SK. Memorial donations may be made to the Quill Plains Centennial Lodge Heritage Garden Fund.
