Stanley Wellington Sampson
(October 23, 1915 – August 8, 2011)
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Stan Sampson, beloved husband, father and grandfather. Stan passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family. The day before Stan passed away he was still making people smile with his singing.
Stan was born in Waldron, Saskatchewan to Bertha and Edward Sampson the fourth of five children. His father passed away from the great influenza of 1917 and the family then moved to Watson where Stan grew into an outstanding athlete. Stan excelled at hockey and was a very fast playing right winger who loved every minute on the ice. Stan played with the Saskatoon Wesley's, Saskatoon Quakers, Regina Vics, Swift Current Indians, Drumheller Miners and had a short stint with the Chicago Black Hawks before being transferred to the New York Rangers.
In December 1942 he enlisted in the army and was stationed in London, England. After returning from the war Stan moved to Melfort where he worked for the Saskatchewan Liquor Board for the next 36 years retiring as manager. In his spare time Stan played hockey for the Melfort Athletics.
In 1946 Stan had his first of four sons, Robert Trydal. Stan married Helen Tkachuk in Melfort in 1951 and they had three sons Edward (1951), Dennis (1952) and Chad (1959). They spent all their free time at McPhee lake where they built a cabin on the lakefront. He enjoyed the serenity and beauty of nature with many hours fishing in the lake. In 1987 Stan and Helen moved to White Rock, BC. Stan enjoyed living at the coast and was a very active man still bicycling around his neighbourhood at 93.
Stan watched with great pride as his family grew up around him. Stan loved family gatherings, cards, games, singing, his afternoon coffee at the mall and attending his grandchildren's activities. On April 11th, 2011 Stan and Helen celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
Stan was predeceased by his parents, brother Hubin and sisters Myrl, Judy and Bernice. Left to mourn his loss is his loving wife Helen Sampson, sons and grandchildren Bob (Glenna) and Katie Trydal; Ed (Sheila) and Levi (Stacey), Daniel (Claire), and Casey Sampson; Dennis (Melane), Mark, Trisha, Michael and David Sampson; and Chad Sampson and Jan Sampson.
A Celebration of Life was held on August 13th in White Rock, BC. Stan will be missed but not forgotten and will remain in our hearts forever.
