Stephania Zacharki
(February 24, 1914 – August 25, 2011)
It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother Stephania Zacharki on Thursday, August 25, 2011 at Mont St. Joseph Nursing Home at the age of 97.
Stephania was born on February 24, 1914 in Horodyshche, Ukraine. She came to Canada in 1938 to the Foxford/Weirdale area. Stephania and her husband Mike settled on the original homestead and began their successful farming career until they retired in 1979 to their home in Prince Albert and continued to help their son Bill farm. Stephania and Mike enjoyed 54 wonderful years together.
Stephania will be remembered for the love of her new country Canada, the land and the opportunities it provided for her and her family. Together with her husband Mike she accepted the challenge of hard work and hardships with strength, courage and faith. Nothing was impossible to accomplish. Her life centered around love for people, family, her children and grandchildren’s accomplishments. Her greatest joy was her four precious great-grandchildren. Stephania never forgot her homeland, the family she left behind and helping them in their needs.
Stephania is survived by her loving family – son William (Sylvia) of Prince Albert; daughter Elsie (Robert Hulme) of Calgary, AB; four grandchildren Cindy (Monty Nelson) of Edmonton, AB, Christelle Zacharki of Calgary, AB, Michael (Gayle) Hulme of Calgary, AB and Michelle (Keith Ottway) of Calgary, AB; four great-grandchildren Myra Nelson, Owen and Ethan Hulme and Vince Ottway; many nieces, nephews and other relatives; her sister Julia Baran; a sister-in-law Mrs. Mike Levitsky as well as numerous nieces and nephews in the Ukraine. She was predeceased by her husband Mike in 1992; her parents William and Anna Levitsky; two brothers Mike and Stanley in the Ukraine as well as numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
Stephania was an avid member of St. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church in Shipman and later St. George’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Prince Albert. Her faith, kindred spirit and strong religious beliefs enabled her to live, love and laugh to the fullest. Mom/Baba was always active – whether it was cooking, baking, berry or mushroom picking, growing exotic flowers, gardening, crocheting, embroidering, sewing, canning, making wool and later creating mitts, socks or quilts, participating in community activities and prasnicks.
In her younger days she enjoyed the threshing crews which symbolized the rewards of a job well done! Life was not easy, but she was happy with a smile on her face, a song from her heart, poetry reciting from her school days in the Ukraine and prayers of thanksgiving for the support, comradeship of people, visiting and the rewards and success of farming alongside her husband, son and daughter. Her contributions to life, living life to the fullest and contentment are immeasurable. We are confident that God has taken “one of the best”. May she rest in peace. VICHNAYA PAM’IAT! We love you dearly Mom/Baba and pra Baba and will cherish your memory FOREVER!
Prayer service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, August 29 from River Park Memorial Chapel. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 30 from St. George’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, 752 – 14 Street West by Reverend Father Ivan Nahachewsky. Interment will take place in the Ukrainian Section of South Hill Cemetery.
