Arnold “Mac” Howland
(January 29, 1912 – September 9, 2011)
It is with deep sorrow that the family announces the death of Arnold Maxon “Mac” Howland late of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, who passed away peacefully in his sleep at Pineview Terrace Lodge on Friday, September 9, 2011 at the age of 99 years.
Mac was born in St. Mary’s York County, New Brunswick on January 29, 1912 and moved with his family to Big River, Saskatchewan, where his father operated a tugboat on Cowan Lake, hauling log booms. The family later moved to Prince Albert where he completed his schooling. As a young man Mac started work at Waskesui, where he worked on the construction of the breakwater, and on the construction of the old highway into the park. He began his career with the Government of Saskatchewan in the thirties where he worked for a time manning a fire tower at Thunder Mountain in the north.
Mac met his wife of sixty-seven years, Dorothy, in 1938 and they were married on August 26, 1939. They made their first home at Grassy Lake, near Choiceland, where Mac worked as a radio operator. They later moved to Paddockwood, and then in 1947 they moved to Meadow Lake until 1950 when Mac was transferred to Prince Albert. He continued to work for the Department of Natural Resources through its many name changes until his retirement in 1977. After his retirement he started to make the molds for the ceramic classes that Dorothy taught. They continued with this business until Dorothy’s health made it necessary for them to quit.
Mac was a Boy Scout leader, and instructor with the St. John Ambulance Association and a member of the Masons Lodge. He was an avid fisherman and bird hunter and had a life-long interest in woodworking. He was a rock hound and spent a lot of time traveling around the country looking for interesting stones and fossils. He made many lovely pieces of jewelry from the rocks they found. He was a member of Toastmasters and was an interesting and entertaining speaker. He enjoyed going on camping trips with his family, traveling around Canada and the States.
He was predeceased by his wife Dorothy in 2006; his parents Charles and Alice Howland; his brothers Obry, Douglas, Fred (Ted), Ralph and Ronald. He leaves behind to mourn his daughter Gail Sackett; his son Noel (Judy) Howland; grandchildren Arnie Kaine, Ray Howland, Brian Howland, Douglas (Megan) Howland, Annette Cann and great-grandchildren Ayla, Faron, Kristen and Logan; his brothers Cyril (Agnes) Howland, Gerald (Diane) Howland and his sister Rose (Dennis) Williams; sister-in-law Frances Howland as well as many nieces and nephews.
Dad always had many amusing stories to tell us of the characters he met and the trials and tribulations of working in the “bush”. He loved the forest and all it entailed. Dad you will be sorely missed until we meet again in Heaven.
We thank the wonderful staff of Pineview Terrace Lodge for the loving care they gave Dad for the last few years of his life after he fell and broke his hip. Music was always a big part of Dad’s life and he especially enjoyed singing along with many musical groups and singers that regularly volunteered their time and talent to entertain the people at Pineview.
Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, September 15 from River Park Memorial Chapel – 301 River Street West. Reverend Nora Vedress will officiate. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Mac’s name to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan, the CNIB or the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan.
Family and friends may send email condolences to www.riverparkfuneral.ca. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care of Don Moriarty – Funeral Director.
