Dr. Raza Bhimji
(September 25, 1927 – October 2, 2011)
It was with great sadness that the family announces the death of Dr. Mohamed Raza Fazal Bhimji in Surrey, B.C. Devoted husband to Nargis, his wife of 53 years. Loving father to Fazal (Lianne), Dr. Arif (Sandra), Iffat Ritter (Robin), Joy and Jeff (Tammy). Forever cherished in the hearts of his precious grandchildren Aysha, Hishaam, Alexander, Kari, Andrew, Aden, Logan, Kennya, Paris and Bransyn. Dad will be sadly missed by extended family, friends, colleagues and associates. He was a rare gem with a generous heart; always concerned with others before himself. There will never be another person like him.
Born in Fort Portal, Toro, Western Province Uganda, Dad spent his early life in Uganda and Tanzania. He obtained his M.B.B.S. in Karachi, Pakistan and a Scottish Conjoint Diploma in Edinburgh, Scotland. In 1968, he emigrated to England and a year later accepted an offer from the Government of Canada for a position in Fort Rae, NWT.
Eventually moving to Prince Albert, he was involved with Public Health for First Nations, specializing in communicable disease control. This led to a transfer to Edmonton, where he was responsible for tuberculosis control for part of the NWT and Yukon Territory. After positions in North Battleford and Prince Albert, he settled in 1987 in Regina as the Regional Medical Officer and after retirement was appointed Provincial Coroner from 1995 to 2005.
Service and burial have taken place. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.
