Shellbrook sisters seeking win at provincial curling championships

Jan 26, 2016 | 4:01 PM

Two sisters from Shellbrook are looking forward to curling in a provincial championship close to their hometown.

Stefanie Lawton and Marliese Kasner have been training hard for the Viterra Scotties Tournament of Hearts Women’s Provincial Championships beginning Wed., Jan. 27 at the Prince Albert Golf and Curling Club.

Kasner still lives in Shellbrook and said being on the road a lot makes it difficult for loved ones to watch them curl.

“To be right close to our home town and have people come in to watch a game is awesome,” Kasner said.

She said playing with her sister gives the pair a bit of a leg up on the competition.

“We’ve played together ever since I started; except two years, because I was eligible for juniors then and she wasn’t,” Kasner said.

“It’s just comfort out there, knowing we can say anything to each other and just be honest. There’s no hard feelings.”

Skip, Lawton said the team is feeling really good and she’s excited to be back at a rink she grew up playing in.

“It’s been a while since I’ve played back close to home and, you know, I’m looking forward to it,” Lawton said.

“It’s going to be a lot of fun just seeing a lot of people from back home.”

When it comes to strategy, Lawton’s is quite simple.

“I think it’s just play our normal game and go out there and make shots,” Lawton said. “The teams are going to be tough and we’re going to be ready to play.”

Lawton said representing Saskatchewan at nationals is the team’s ultimate goal, but plan to enjoy every moment.
