Leendert Jan (Leen) Benjamin
(May 5, 1945 – October 23, 2011)
On 23 October 2011, Leen passed away at the Good Samaritan Home in Edmonton after a long struggle with Multiple Sclerosis. He was often a voice for the people in the home. Leen will be missed by his many friends from his years of work in the pipeline installation business. Leen was born the day WW II ended in Holland on 5 May 1945. He immigrated with his family to Prince Albert in 1954. In 1955, the Benjamin family moved to Hagen. Leen attended Harmony School and Birch Hills High School. He graduated in 1963, when for the second year in a row he got the Canadian History Award.
He will be lovingly remembered by his daughter, Marianne Benjamin; his daughter, Nicole Benjamin (Derrick Armstrong) and Leen's granddaughter, Sophia Armstrong; and his devoted friend, Barbara de Deckere; also his sisters: Maria (Edward Lockert), Margriet (Sandy Spademan), Astrid (Mark Ballard), and Olga (Murray Evans), and numerous nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his parents Klaas and Geertje Benjamin, and his brother, Cor.
There was a Memorial Service at 10 A.M., Thursday, 3 November 2011 at the South Side Memorial Chapel, 8310 – 104 Street, Edmonton. Interment of Leen's cremated remains will take place at the Birch Hills Cemetery in the Spring of 2012.
