Mary Mardell
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of an amazing mother devoted grandmother and cherished friend, Mary, who passed away peacefully in her home at Mont St. Joseph at the age of 91 years.
Mary was born in the Fish Creek area to her parents Fred and Annie (nee Osahchuk) Kisil. They moved to Red Deer Hill where they farmed. She married Louis Mardell and had 3 children, Danny, Sophie and Joan who she loved very much. Mary worked several jobs; Canada Packers, Dairy Pool and Foy’s Laundromat.
Mary and her husband bought a service station “Mardells Service” which was a family business. Mary took pride in her customers and loved them very much. She operated the business until her husband passed away. Then mom, Danny and Sophie continued to operate the business. Mom looked after the store. She ordered the fuel and helped with the bookwork. She was great with math and a real asset. She worked with her daughter Sophie. Danny worked fixing vehicles and the tow truck, which he took great pride in. Mom, Danny and Sophie worked long hours and took great pride in their jobs.
In Mom’s spare time (which was very little) she loved to crochet, fishing, cooking, baking, making cabbage rolls, perogies and borchst. Her meals were fantastic. The loss of her beloved daughter Sophie took a toll on mom. She never recovered from her loss.
Mary had a stroke and lived in the old Mont St. Joseph until the new Mont St. Joseph was built. She was a resident until her passing. She loved playing Bingo. She participated in all activities such as selling popcorn with Danny and Raffle ticket. She was a whiz with numbers. She loved the residents and particularly the nursing staff who took of her. Most of all she loved church and the good Lord.
Mom was predeceased by her parents Fred and Annie Kisil; her beloved husband Louis Mardell; her daughter Sophie Mardell; her 4 brothers Walter, Alex, Danny; her sister Grace (Tony) Chubak. She is survived by her son Danny Mardell and her daughter Joan (Eddie) Listwan; her 2 grandchildren Sherry (Ron Ostrom) and Darryn Listwan; her great-grandchild Alexandra Sophia Ostrom; her brother Peter (Pat) Kisil and nephew David Kisil. Mary has many relatives, nieces and nephews which she loved very much.
