It is with great sorrow the family of Adrianus Johannus Hermus (better known as Jim) announce his passing on January 5, 2012 with his wife of 60 years, Hubertha, by his side. Jim was born the youngest of 6 children in Zevenbergen, Holland on November 15, 1924 to Theodore & Johanna Hermus (nee van Ginneken). He immigrated to Canada after the war in 1949 and met Hubertha Honing in Paris prior to both families sailing to Canada. Jim worked for a year in BC where his brother, Ted, had settled the year before. Jim returned to Saskatchewan and married Bertha on August 21, 1951 in Cudworth, SK. In Jim’s words “After surviving the war for 5 years and being born to be a farmer” they settled in Melfort where Jim landed a job working on a farm. His passion, hard work, perseverance and dedication for farming made him a successful farmer, wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. The soil was in his blood and as he told us many times “Summer fallow in our ears!” They retired to Melfort in the fall of 2006. Jim loved to take a drive to “Check the crops” with anyone willing to go for a drive. It is hard to write, in such a small space about a man who made such a big impression. He was firm but loving. Jim always had a smile and a twinkle in his eye. Surviving him are his wife, Hubertha Hermus (Honing). Son – Ted (Judy), Adrian (Kim, great granddaughter – Adrianna) Jared, Scott. Son – Bernie ( Joan), Jodi, Michael, Laura, Adam. Daughter – Mary (Curtis) Paquin, Bradley (Jessica) Sarah. Daughter – Peggy – Anne (Barry) Gordon, Mark (Jessica), Brent (Taryn), Ryan (Brandy), Steven. Daughter – Joanne Hermus, Johnathan. Daughter – Jeanette (Ron) Kostiuk, Rieka, Danita, Adam. Son – Dennis (Anita). His older brother, Gerard Hermus and family in Holland. He was predeceased by his parents Theodore and Johanna Hermus. Siblings – Hank, Ted, Nellie and Toni. His father and mother-in-law, Henry and Maria Honing and brother-in-law John Honing. If a man’s wealth is measured by the number of friends a man has then Jim was a very, very wealthy man. Vigil of Prayer was held Tuesday, January 10, 2011 at 7:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. Both services were held from Our Lady of Consolation Roman Catholic Church in Melfort, SK. The celebrant was Father Alberto Dela Pena. Honorary pallbearers were Bill Van der Byl, Lucien Fagnou, Casey Van Haasten, Rodney Gaetz, Jim Van Burgsteden, Casey Ackermans, Wayne Garinger, Mike Freistadt & Cor Prinse.
