Larry Whitter
The family wishes to announce the passing of Larry Whitter on February 14, 2012, after a short and brave battle with cancer. Dad was born on May 10, 1940, to John Sr. and Emily Whitter. He was married in 1961 to Carolyn (Bunnie) Morash, and his three children followed, Shawn in 1962, Darren in 1966 and Brad in 1973.
Dad (“Whit”) lived his entire life in Prince Albert, attending Prince Edward, PACI and Riverside schools. His work life began at an early age as he joined the family garage business, Whitter Motors, with his dad and brother John. Later in life he sold real estate for Hubel Agencies and was the broker for Century 21 Real Estate. Afterwards he began selling for various companies, ending with North Star Screen Printing. A natural salesman, Dad loved to work and stopped only when his illness didn’t allow him to continue. He enjoyed being with people and especially cherished the relationship he had with Kelly, Tony and all the employees of North Star.
Dad served on multiple dealer advisory boards for Esso and Shell and was on the executive of the Prince Albert Golf & Curling Club for eight years as well as the Prince Albert Real Estate Board for eight years.
Dad was a highly-organized individual, a list maker and an analytical thinker. He preferred not to leave anything to chance. He was methodical with anything he did and in the last months kept himself busy making sure that his family would not be burdened with any extra tasks. He viewed his illness in a very practical manner and went about organizing it like he would have any other task.
Dad loved to hunt and fish and be in the great outdoors. He had a huge appreciation for nature and all it had to offer, especially when he could enjoy it with family and friends or in the many miles he travelled on his routes. Dad took many hunting and fishing trips around the province with numerous friends over the years and recalled all of those experiences fondly. He enjoyed the friendships made while his boys played hockey and the many fun times spent in rinks and on road trips. He made many friends in the years he curled. He took pleasure in watching his grandsons play hockey and took pride in the accomplishments of all his grandchildren. Dad enjoyed watching sports, especially when the Detroit Red Wings or Cincinnati Reds were playing and enjoyed a wide and eclectic variety of music.
Dad was well-known to laugh and share a joke and kept his good humour until the end, enjoying even the smallest mercies while being so ill. He managed to maintain the positive
attitude that characterized him throughout his life and inspired us all. Dad thoroughly enjoyed human relationships and appreciated the qualities that individuals had to offer.
Larry was predeceased by his parents and three brothers in infancy and is survived by his daughter Shawn (Randy Hurd) and their children Bretton and Zach; his son Darren (Lisa) and his daughter Danielle (Jordan Dent); his son Brad (Tara) and their children Camryn, Will and Burke; his brother John and his children Pat, Bev, Carmelle and Ken and their families; his great friends Perry and Marty Jarrett and their family; Doug Campbell and Del Davison and numerous other cherished friends.
“Dress Code For Life – Wear A Smile”
The family would like to thank Uncle John Whitter, Dad’s brother, friend and mentor for returning from Mexico to care for Dad and be with us until the end. Extended gratitude goes to cousins Pat, Bev, Carmelle and Ken and their families for coming to see Dad and brighten his last days. Our thanks to Perry and Marty Jarrett and their family for being exceptional neighbours, the best of friends and caregivers to Dad and for enabling him to stay at home as long as he did and to numerous other endeared friends who called or stopped over to see Dad in his last weeks. Our thanks also to Dr. Rob Ardell for being Dad’s doctor and friend for many years and to the nursing staff of the palliative care unit of Victoria Hospital.
A private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the palliative care unit of the Victoria Hospital or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated
