Sister Maria Gareau passed away peacefully in the Infirmary at the Presentation of Mary in Prince Albert on Monday, June 4, 2012 at the age of 90. Maria was born in Bellevue, SK on November 12, 1921. In 1940, she entered the convent of the Daughters of Providence/Les Filles de la Providence. She was thoroughly dedicated to teaching and teaching she did for 40 years…St. Louis, St. Brieux, Prud’Homme, Victoire, Montréal, Québec and Vonda where she retired in 1984. When Maria retired, she probably wasn’t tired…she continued working in the Diocese of Prince Albert, in the field of Catechesis and Parish work. She later moved to the Diocese of Saskatoon where she continued her services as a parish worker in Beechy. Sister Maria was also involved in the l’ACFC and L’A.P.F.S. and all other organizations that involved the promotion of the French Language in Saskatchewan. Her love for children and youth was remarkable. She helped in camps during the summer months when, we are sure, a good rest would have been appreciated. After her many years of dedication, Sister Maria finally retired in 2001 at the Sisters of Sion Convent in Saskatoon where she lived with a community of retired Sisters, Filles de la Providence. In 2005 Maria moved with her Sisters to St. Volodymyr Assisted Living. Because of her health, she then was accepted at the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary Infirmary in Prince Albert since 2010. Sister lived her life in a spirit of thanksgiving. She loved God, loved people and people loved her. We, the Daughters of the Providence, wish to express our heartfelt thanks and affection to the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary and the staff of the Infirmary for the excellent care given to our sister. Sister Maria leaves to mourn her Sisters of the Daughters of Providence/Les Filles de la Providence; her five sisters Edna, Juliette, Olive, Sister Gertrude pm and Jeannette; her three brothers Charles s.g., Isidore and André as well as many nieces and nephews. Prayer service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 7 from the Sisters of the Presentation Chapel. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 8 from the St. Louis Roman Catholic Church by the Most Reverend Albert Thévenot, M. Afr., Bishop of Prince Albert and Father Greg Elder. Interment will take place in the St. Louis Roman Catholic Cemetery. Family and friends may send email condolences to www.riverparkfuneral.ca. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care of Don Moriarty, Funeral Director
