Muriel Enid (nee Maxwell) Cross of Prince Albert passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 4, 2012 at the age of 86. She was born to James Albert and Elizabeth (Currie) Maxwell in Kincaid, SK on August 5, 1925 to join brothers Virton and Allan and then younger sister, Edith. Mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and tenacious role model, Muriel leaves to mourn her daughters Eva and Lillis (Steve) of Prince Albert and her son Albert (Adriana) of Lethbridge; her grandchildren Jennifer (Lauren) of Prince George, Melissa (Brian) of Victoria; grandsons Benjamin, Anthony and Simon of Lethbridge, great-granddaughter Marissa and newest great-grandchild soon to make his/her appearance. She is also survived by her brother Allan and brother-in-law Leo, sister-in-law Catherine (Kate) along with many nieces and nephews across Western Canada. Muriel was predeceased by her husband Lawrence, infant daughter Laurie and great-grandson Owen, her brother Virton and sister Edith Gross. Muriel’s mother was a teacher in southern Saskatchewan, so Muriel, during the struggles of the Great Depression, recognized the value of education and completed her high school in Unity before training at the Saskatoon Normal School. She started her teaching career in Saltcoats where she met her husband. Together Muriel and Laurie farmed in the Russellville district, south of Prince Albert; then Muriel taught north of Prince Albert at Van Mehren School in the Mayview district. After devoting many years to childrearing, Muriel taught at the Sturgeon Lake School. Muriel was active in Calvary United Church, starting the first Sunday School class for mentally challenged children. As an educator and advocate for mentally handicapped people, she led the provincial association and continued involvement until health issues hampered her zeal. Muriel also had a love for gardening, piano, cooking and knitting winter mittens. Her retirement was enjoyed with the Rock Hounds, gardening, singing in the choir along with maintaining United Church Women contacts. The family would like to thank the staff of the Victoria Union Hospital in Prince Albert for their caring and compassion as well as Calvary United Church minister, Nora. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 7 from River Park Memorial Chapel. Reverend Nora Vedress will officiate. Interment will take place in the Garden of Last Supper, Prince Albert Memorial Gardens. It is the family’s request that those wishing to leave a tribute may do so to the Prince Albert Literacy Network or Community Living Association. Family and friends may send email condolences to www.riverparkfuneral.ca. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care of Don Moriarty, Funeral Director
