October 10, 1936 – July 12, 2012
With his loving family by his side, Gary Garrison passed away at Victoria Hospital on Wednesday, July 12, 2012 after a challenging battle with cancer. Gary is survived by his wife Velva; daughter Velvalee (Denis) Foster of Parksville BC and their children Branan, Brady, and Kaylee; son Robbie (Helen) Garrison of Prince Albert and their children Britney, Scott and Chad; brother George (Grace) Garrison of Meath Park SK; sisters-in-law Marion Norton, Yvonne Sutherland and Bette Sutherland; brother-in-law John (Aldis) Farr; Aunt Marie Garrison of Prince Albert; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Gary was predeceased by his son Patrick (2003); his parents Bill and Bea Garrison; brother Robert Garrison; Velva’s parents Sandy and Clara Sutherland; sisters-in-law Laura Farr and Eileen Sutherland; brothers-in-law Les, Murray and Colin Sutherland, and Percy Norton. Born in Prince Albert on October 10, 1936 to Bill and Bea Garrison, Gary grew up on the family farm in the Weirdale area. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1955 and enjoyed an adventure-filled career as a search and rescue technician and later as a land, sea and arctic survival instructor. Following his retirement, Gary returned to Prince Albert to take up his passions of farming and logging. He also served as a Provincial Corrections Officer in Prince Albert. Gary was a 30 year member of the ANAVETS Club and served as a councilor for the RM of Paddockwood. The family would like to thank all of their friends and neighbors for their support and well-wishes as well as all of Dad’s lifelong friends in the Para Rescue Association. A special thank you to Dr. Shari McKinny of Saskatoon and the many doctors and nurses of the ICU, PCU, and 5th Floor at St. Paul’s Hospital who showed such compassion and worked so hard to help Dad. The family also wishes to sincerely thank the staff of the Palliative Care Unit at Victoria Hospital for their warm and gentle care of Gary and their kindness to his family when we brought Dad home to Prince Albert. Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 18, 2012 at Gray’s Funeral Chapel, 575 – 28th Street West, Prince Albert SK with Pastor Dennis Serfas, Director Spiritual Care, Prince Albert Parkland Health Region officiating. Interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of other tributes, donations may be made to the Palliative Care Unit in Victoria Hospital, 1200 – 24th Street West, Prince Albert, SK S6V 5T4.
