Price, James William age 83, passed away Monday, October 15, 2012, at the Athabasca Health Care Facility in Stony Rapids, Sask. Jim was born in Black Diamond, Alberta, on Sept. 6, 1929, and grew up near Stettler, Alberta. As a young miner in Kimberley, BC, Jim pursued a pilot's license and embarked upon a career in aviation. Although an accident in 1953 left him with 2 artificial legs he continued to fly float planes commercially, the only double amputee commercial pilot in Canada. Jim eventually earned his living in the North West Territories and northern Saskatchewan as a prospector, with the help of his great love, CF-TQT, a Cessna 185. He continued to fly and prospect until well into his 70's.
Jim is survived by his sister Lenore Combs (Charles) of Valley Center, Calif.; nieces Marsha Kenyon, of Redding, Calif., and her children Jarrod and Natalie; niece Linda Headrick (Dennis) of Arizona and daughters Leslie and Jamie; niece Sherri Lex of Orange County, Calif., and her children David and Rachel; his nephew Greg Lumsden (Karen) of Sandspit, BC, and his daughters Rita and Meghan; several half-sisters all living in Alberta, and nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews from those families; and his very special cousins Betty and Ron Reimer and their daughter Pat of White Rock, BC. He will be especially missed by the family of Rod and Caron Dubnick of La Ronge, his dear friends Jan Whitridge of Regina and Jean Buck of Sidney, BC, and his many friends among the staff and residents of the Athabasca Health Care Facility who were drawn to this quiet, gentle man. Jim was predeceased by his mother Anne, his sister Irene Lumsden of Westlock, Alberta, and his nephew Bradley Combs of Valley Center, Calif.
Jim's wish was to have his ashes scattered in the Uranium City area of northern Saskatchewan, where he made his home for many years. Plans for a celebration of Jim's life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of tributes please consider a donation to the Parkinson's Society of Canada.
